Bees are small, but their impact on our environment, food systems and communities is enormous. In Episode 3 of our Beekeeping Series, we explore an important question: Are you a bee supporter, or are you ready to become a beekeeper? ππ»
Whether you are interested in keeping bees or simply want to create a more bee-friendly environment, there are simple actions we can all take.
π» Start by Becoming a Bee Supporter
You don’t have to own a hive to support bees. Creating an environment where bees can thrive is already an important contribution.
1. Plant colourful indigenous flowers πΈπΏ
Planting colourful, indigenous flowers provides bees with important sources of nectar and pollen. Creating diverse, bee-friendly gardens can help provide food for bees while also adding beauty and biodiversity to our surroundings.
2. Provide water π§π
Bees need water too. Providing a safe water source can help bees access the water they need, particularly in hot and dry conditions.
3. Say no to pesticides and fungicides π«π§ͺ
Reducing the use of pesticides and fungicides can help create safer environments for bees and other beneficial insects. Being mindful of what we use in our gardens is one way we can contribute to healthier ecosystems.
π Ready to Become a Beekeeper?
If you want to take your relationship with bees a step further, beekeeping requires more than simply purchasing a hive. It requires education, preparation, discipline and commitment.
π 1. Education
Learning about bees and understanding their behaviour is an essential first step. Before getting started, aspiring beekeepers need to understand how colonies function, how to work safely around bees and how to identify potential problems.
π§° 2. Equipment
Beekeeping requires the appropriate equipment to protect the beekeeper and manage the hive safely and effectively.
π 3. Discipline: Regular Inspections
Beekeeping requires discipline. Regular hive inspections allow beekeepers to observe the colony, monitor its health and identify issues early.
π 4. A Suitable Location
Choosing the right location for your hive is important. Beekeepers need to consider the surroundings, access to forage and water, safety and the relationship between the hive and the surrounding community.
π° 5. Count the Cost
Beekeeping is an investment. Before starting, it is important to understand the costs involved, from equipment and hive management to ongoing maintenance and time commitment.
π Solutions Driven by UBoN
The United Beekeepers of Namibia (UBoN) plays an important role in supporting knowledge-sharing and solutions around beekeeping in Namibia.
Episode 3 reminds us that supporting bees doesn’t have to begin with owning a hive. It can begin with something as simple as planting flowers, providing water and making environmentally responsible choices. π±π
And for those ready to become beekeepers, the journey starts with education, preparation and a commitment to learning.
